Domains For Half Their Actual Value!

The simple question one needs to ask is how does one determine the actual value of a domain?

Regardless of what people might say or charge for an actual appraisal the real answer is that a domain has a value based on what sort of price it can "fetch" in the open market.

In case you happen to be the type of person who simply loves to learn from one's mistakes then pay close attention. Having certain economic pressures (along the line of having to settle "un-expected" financial obligations in the high four to low five figure range) I did some un characteristic moves.

I listed some of my best domains, that I actually like enough to put my own time, thought and investment dollars into developing on auction. However the problem I believe may be the choice of venue.

I believe the general idea behind "snapnames" is that one can get a domain that is "expiring" or dropping. I suppose the expectation here is to somehow obtain precious diamonds of several carat weight for the price of a few pounds of copper!

Yes, I am trying to sell domains quickly (as in before the first of the month) however why is it that I can not even find these domains "publicly listed"... I am worried!

Here is my take on domain values:

One there are domains that will have obvious and immediate intrinsic value:

Such as:

CompleteWeddingPackage.com

(by the way, I saw weddingpictures.com listed with min bids between $25,000-50,000)

FindCashQuickly.com

In my humble opinion this domain is easily worth money in the $25,000 and up range. Why?

The answer is simple, and its based on solid information readily obtainable from important internet sources such as Google. How much money do advertisers have to pay per click to advertise their services. I happen to own in excess of 300 domains. The domains listed above are due to have their listings expires in another day.

The thing to try to figure out when pricing your domains for an auction is how to use the information which you understand along with some sort of "selling psychology".

That is where I have made my mistakes.

Price Justification For FindCashQuickly.com

Under the column titled CPC [ Cost Per Click ] SmallBizLoans.net has a CPC of $6.33. This means that if you are planning on developing this website (yes with all the expense and other matters relating to having some good ideas) you would then be able to (based on Googles current assessment) be able to command a price of $6.33 for PPC [ Pay Per Click ] advertising.

Now look at this:

paydayloans.com
$958K USD
2K
2.3K
0
562.5K
$8.74 USD

PayDayLoans, makes loans based on someone needing money "urgently" and is able to pay it back with their upcoming paycheck. They charge very high interest rates. The CPC as determined by Google is $8.74 Per Click.

So, the value of the domain (its not mine unfortunately) according to Estibot the value of this "Generic" or unbranded domain "PayDayLoans.com" is $958.000! The company that uses the domain does not even show it in its browser.

So now imagine, that what ever the value of the specific domain might be, in my opinion its of the "quality category" of $25,000 or perhaps much higher!

Yet my mistake was this:

I may have placed the domain in "the wrong venue". If people are looking for domains to pick up for say a few hundred or even a two to three thousand dollars, then there may not be much bidding action of a domain where:

The minimum bid for FindCashQuickly.com is currently set at $2,450, and in my mind I never really wanted to sell this particular domains for anything significantly less than $10,000!

  1. The first thing we can learn from this is to understand the different venues where domains can be auctioned off.
  2. It is also extremely important to read the terms of service. This is not one of those instances where you want to join a "social network" or use an app, and will just check the yes box without thinking!
  3. Do your research first, use a website like this, sign up with estibot (linked above) use the science available to help pick out good domains before you buy them.
Finally, my best advice is to have some sort of use for the domain you buy, because if you can not sell it yourself, if you have a good idea and a use for it, you can always develop it yourself.
I hope this article helps those who are new to the world of buying and selling domains for profit

Anyone who is interested in purchasing domains directly from me, that are not one of the 33 domains above listed at:

Or to take a shot and try to pick up my domain which was (overpriced) only from the point of bidding (the smarter approach is to use a lower yet respectable initial minimum bid of say between $500-$750) and then set a reserve price for say $7,000-$15,000, depending on what you think your domain can fetch in the marketplace.

In the meantime even though in my mind the price is very low (for the min bid)

FindCashQuickly.com

It is still entirely possible that the domain listing will expire without anyone bidding on it.

In fact I may have read a similar story regarding:

Secure.me

Or perhaps even the name iCloud.com. Its amazing to read these stories on how these high quality domains:

" Until recently, iCloud.com was a domain name and a storage-as-a-cloud service owned by Linkoping, Sweden-based desktop-as-a-service company, Xcerion. Xcerion’s iCloud service has just been rebranded to CloudMe, and the company acquired the CloudMe.com domain on April 5, 2011

Source of Above:

Apple May Have Snapped Up iCloud.com

The article cited above mentions "unconfirmed" sources saying that then name may have sold for a price of 4.5 million!

Who knows what will be next weeks big seller in the domain world? What will be the Domain flavor of the day. One thing I do believe is that there tend to be some great reasons and some sort of season for certain domains.

When you advertise a price that might even seem high to you, you may never know if you actual undersold it.

For example I had:

MyWorldOfWork.com

Lounging around on one of the major domain sellers, with a low (under $5,000) Buy Now price. Then out of know where there was someone saying they were interested (with absolutely no mention of the major company where it was listed)

The interested party looked me up on some website similar to

WhoIs.sc

and they found me.

It was perfectly within my rights to take down the listing, and I did. If I never had heard from them, I might have actually had been happy to get whatever the price it was listed for (less of course a significant commission for the listing company).

My reader may be wondering well is this a success story or what? Well the book is still open on that one. I now feel the domain is worth perhaps 10 times what it had originally been listed for.

You can be sure that If and when the domain above either sells for at least half of what it may be truly worth or gets developed into a website that has some huge growth potential, then I expect that my devoted readers will be hearing all about!

Unless of course if I sell all my domains for Half of what they are truly worth and then move to some uncharted desert Isle.

Stephen C. Sanders
Obviously hoping to actually sell a few domains (even if I can't get top dollar) because- life requires cash!
