Reading A Domain Spread Sheet: Serp,CPC,Search

There are all kinds of reasons that people decide to choose a particular name for a particular website. I am sure many people are there thinking a bunch a people sit around a conference table and say;

" Hey how about; TodaysClouds? "

" Nah, too nondescript, one of the account exec leaps to his feet and boldly states, how about..... "... MindYourMeta ... "....

The whole conference room falls silent, a rare thing for this busy 5th Avenue Ad Agency, that is trying to get out of the print and television rut and into the 21st century concepts of social media and search engine driven organic search and cutting edge, SEO.

Everyone was looking at the CEO, a stylish man in his late 40's who had such a pensive look on his face, the mid six figure senior account executive in his mid 30's, who just put in his two cents with an outlandish concept, looks down briefly at the floor and then sheepishly and slowly, sinks back into his high back leather chair.

The newest guy, on the transition team, jumps up, gesturing wildly and chants, " Let's Go Meta " and starts pounding out the chant familiar to every die hard Mets fan in the city. Lets Go Meta, .. ... Lets Go Meta.. ... Lets Go Meta .. . . Lets Go..... ...

It was his first day on the job, suddenly he swallowed hard and noticed nobody else was joining him in his chant. In fact people were sitting there almost in shock with their jaws had dropped.

As matter of fact everyone was silent and motionless. Suddenly the new guys stomach started to turn as he gingerly sat back upon his stool in the corner. He was thinking to himself how the recruiter said he should share his ideas but not be disagreeable.

Okay, so let get to the domain statistics so we can get back to our story:

So the domain name is a straightforward enough concept however the endings are not. In addition there are certain rules, which are strictly adhered to in domain names. Some of these rules are well known, and some are not so well known.

Perhaps a few people are familiar with the strange looking:

Del.icio.us

Notice the domain name has a few dots. Okay, well apparently dots are allowed. Now those of you familiar with certain naming conventions used both in certain file names, and e-mail addresses are often also rigidly enforced in the html code that most web still use for at least part of their code.

The one change that I am of aware is that the internet used to use the _ underscore, which has now been replaced by - hyphens. So instead of what seemed to be hard to describe, _ underscore which could of course potentially confused with underline we now just have a hyphen, so if we want we can have hyphens in our domain names.

Therefore for those who love to be grammatically correct we can have domains like:

Paradigm-Shift.info

Or, perhaps someone into education of philosophy might be interested in:

Self-Actualize.org

SocialAdCloud.com

The part that comes before the ending is the Sld while the .com in this case (the final letter sequence after the dot is the TLD. Very often the statistics will look identical for the .com's and the .org's.

Most people if given the choice would simply choose to go with the .com TLD because they are more familiar with it. (More on this later)

Serp

Now as far as Serp, this is the 4th column of stats on the spread sheet above, Search Results Phrase. This number tells you the number of search results that you get form a search engine such as google on that phrase from the word or words or phrase in the domain.

CPC

CPC is cost per click is very important for many reasons, however this is really only a brief intro and we go into more detail in our next lesson, when we might be able to touch on domain parking, and domain auctions.
